THE SINGER'S GUIDE TO BREATHING

Perhaps one of the most frequently circulated vocal myths is that there is some special manner in which the singer is to breathe. Nothing could be further from the truth.

By breathing naturally when we speak, we allow the breathing process to take care of itself. If we attempt to control our breathing when speaking, like inhaling at the beginning of each sentence, the act of breathing would pose numerous problems. These problems are eliminated merely by letting our body and subconscious mind take care of the breathing for us.

The inhalation of breath while singing is to be accomplished in the same manner as when sleeping. During the intake of air the abdomen should expand. There should be little if any motion of the upper chest during inhalation. When singing, breath should be taken in through the mouth because it is faster and easier. At times, breath may be taken in through the nose when it feels more natural to inhale in this manner. Other than breathing through the mouth, breathing when singing is to be treated the same as breathing when speaking. Then it will never pose a problem.

The less the singer concentrates on specific muscular actions when breathing, the less distracted he/she will be. Most of the great singing teachers claim that one need not be familiar with the numerous muscles and tendons involved with playing the violin in order to become an accomplished violinist.

Charles Santley was the greatest British baritone of his day and a student of Manuel Garcia, a singing teacher and vocal expert of supereminent reputation. In a reference to Manuel Garcia, Santley wrote in his book (The Art Of Singing), "I have never heard him say a word about larynx, or pharynx, glottis, or other organ in the production and emission of the voice. He taught singing not surgery."
